Vitamin B3 is really good for lowering cholesterol that is coming out of the fat cells or liver and it is also good to support the liver in general. Vitamin B5 is another key B vitamin that is essential in the adaptation to fat burning. If you are deficient in B5 and B1, you may notice more fatigue, keto flu and keto rash, any of those symptoms. Number 5, vitamin A which is also essential in dealing with insulin resistance and you would get vitamin A in cod liver oil, grass-fed cheese, grass-fed liver and egg yolks. No. 6 vitamin D and I recommend vitamin D3 version, this is really good for insulin resistance and improving that. It is also in cod liver oil, egg yolk. In fact if you consume cod liver oil, you get a 50/50 split of vitamin A and vitamin D so you could kill 2 birds at 1 stone. No. 7 choline which is essential of getting the fat off the liver. I recommend doing electrolyte powder for the minerals. I recommend nutritional yeast for B1, B3, B5 and it even has choline. I have a version that has non-fortified, it is in a tablet form with added B12. You have electrolyte powder, nutritional yeast, and cod liver oil and if you really have fatty liver you could have choline in addition to the choline that is in nutritional yeast to strip off the fat from the liver. Well, most people in this country do not. That being said you don't even know where the fruit or vegetable was grown, so you don't know about the soil that it was grown in, you don't know how long it's been on the truck, how long it's been in the store and by the time you get it home, how much of the vitamins and minerals are even left in it? So the way I look at a supplement is it's an insurance policy. Now everyone has car insurance but no one plans to crash their car. In terms of supplementation you have to figure out that if an athlete is working out more and maybe eating less food than they need because they have to decrease body fat. When you work out more your needs go up, because you're working out harder and you're trying to lose body fat, trying to build muscle, what have you. So as the needs go up you want to make sure you're getting all the nutrients your body needs without the extra calories. A lot of people feel that if they're taking a multi-vitamin or a supplement of any kind then they don't need to eat their fruits and vegetables, that they're good. And I disagree, there's a lot of things in the fruits and vegetables that we don't even know about yet. So food is always first. Supplements are there just to help out with any kind of deficiencies and in this country you don't have to worry about deficiencies. It's not really about living, it's about optimizing your performance and that's really what the supplements can help you do. "

WALTHAM, MASSACHUSSETTS — A new study by the U.S. federal government discovered that weight loss and energy boosting supplements cause more than 20,000 emergency-room visits a year, the New York Times reported. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, first tracked emergency room visits at 63 hospitals in the U.S. over 10 years, then analyzed those ER visits in which a dietary supplement was implicated. It found that there were about 23,000 emergency-room visits per year linked to dietary supplements, and that more than a quarter of them occurred among people aged 20 to 34. Roughly 10 percent, or about 2,150 cases yearly, were serious enough to require hospitalization. Symptoms included, among others, severe allergic reactions, heart trouble, chest pain, nausea and vomiting, and were tied to dietary supplements including herbal pills, amino acids, and vitamins, which, according to medical experts, are often adulterated with toxic chemicals. Unlike prescription drugs, dietary supplements marketed for weight loss and energy do not have to be approved by the FDA before they are sold to consumers, and do not have to carry any safety label nor a list of side effects. The results were kind of interesting. On the face of it, Bruce's diet doesn't seem that exciting. He ate a nutrient dense diet and avoided empty calories such as those found in baked goods. He supplemented with vitamins and minerals and ate smaller meals, more frequently. What's more interesting though, is that Bruce Lee also consumed a protein shake mix filled with a variety of interesting additional ingredients. These ingredients included brewer's yeast, inositol, lecithin, egg shell and more. I dug into this and did some research and it turns out this is actually a pretty awesome stack for increasing energy, motivation, brain function, fat metabolism and more. Of course I don't recommend all of it - note that eating egg shell can risk transmission of bacteria unless thoroughly washed and doesn't offer that much nutritional benefit other than calcium. But the rest of it is super interesting, so check it out! Oh and I actually tried the protein mix... not tasty!

The main purpose of dietary supplements is to treat deficiencies of vitamins and minerals or to prevent such deficiencies. For people who are concerned that they may not have an adequate diet, it's very reasonable to take a multivitamin or to take relatively low doses of different nutrients. Megadose supplementation, very high dose supplementation of any vitamin, mineral, or other nutrient, is not recommended due to the health risks. Groups that will benefit from dietary supplementation include women of reproductive age and pregnant women. Folic acid is extremely important in preventing neural tube defects and other birth defects so these groups should be encouraged to take a supplement of a folic acid.
