Ketosis can occur during fasting, when you reduce the amount of carbs or calories in your diet, during pregnancy or after exercising for a long period of time. Many diets use ketosis as the means of burning fat while maintaining muscle - examples include the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets. This strategy can also lead to decreased hunger. How long does it take to kick your body into fat burning, ketosis mode? Roughly 3-4 days of consuming less than 50 carbs per day, the equivalent of 2 bananas. Benefits include weight loss, seizure prevention, cardiovascular health and type-2 diabetes help, to name a few. How does it Work? When glucose is in short supply, your liver will break down fats into ketones, which are then used throughout your body for energy. Muscles and other tissues in your body use ketones rather than glucose for energy metabolism. In a healthy person, the production of ketones for energy is the body’s natural response to starvation, so this happens when dieting, overnight and during fasting. Glucose or Ketones: Which is More Effective? Many brain diseases, such as epilepsy, are already being treated by the ketogenic diet. The mechanisms to why it helps the brain are still being studied, but there are some possible reasons that ketones seem to be a good energy source for the brain. One major Ketone, beta-hydroxybutyrate, or BHB, provides more energy per unit of oxygen than glucose, and thus may be even more efficient than glucose at providing energy to the brain. (3) -The ketogenic diet has also been found to increase the number of mitochondria in brain cells. In a 2004 study on rats, one group was fed a ketogenic diet while the other was fed a normal diet. A positive impact was found on the gene expression for mitochondrial enzymes in the hippocampus, the memory and learning center of the brain. (4) Ketosis and Body Water Composition: High fat and low carb diets are known to lead to fast weight loss. The fast weight loss is due to water weight being shed (5) -When you decrease carbs, you decrease water storage in the body. Who Can Benefit From Ketosis? If you are looking to shed some body fat, ketosis may be a good tool. This can go along with an exercise regimen as you maintain muscle while losing fat. Ketosis can also benefit those who need to boost brain power as energy may be utilized more effectively in the brain. *Be careful because those with diabetes can get too high of a level of ketones in their blood, which is very dangerous. This occurs due to the low levels of insulin in the blood, which will signal the body to produce excess ketones that will build up in the blood, making the blood pH too low. References: 1. Please Subscribe for 3x Videos Per Week + Live Broadcasts! http://ThomasDeLauer.com High Carb Foods to Avoid on a Low Carb Diet: Thomas DeLauer… Sugar Alcohols: Sugar alcohols are a hybrid between a sugar molecule and an alcohol molecule - but are neither one nor the other. A sugar alcohol is also known as a polyol and can be classified as a carb - most are derived from corn starch from genetically modified corn. Commonly included in most sugar free and “low-carb” products, but they do have a caloric/carb value. Each gram of a sugar alcohol turns into anywhere from less than 1 to as much as 3 calories. Use of Sugar Alcohols: Sugar alcohols are slowly and incompletely absorbed in the body. Once they are absorbed they use very little to no insulin to convert to energy as sugar alcohols are incompletely absorbed in the digestive system. A process called “passive diffusion” takes place - sugar alcohols that were consumed draw water into the bowels - results in only partial breakdown. The un-metabolized part of the sugar alcohol starts to rot, which creates a favorable environment for undesirable bacteria and pathogens to thrive and grow. How to Calculate: Subtract half of the grams of sugar alcohol listed on the food label from the total grams of carbs. Ex: Carbs: 20, Sugar Alcohol: 10, Total Carbs: 15 Fiber: Dietary fibers are considered complex carbs, but because fiber doesn’t raise blood glucose, low-carb dieters don’t “count” fiber since our body’s digestive enzymes can’t break it down. Fiber can provide calories, not as glucose, but as products of fermentation in the colon, similar to a sugar alcohol. Some fibers, called soluble fibers, either absorb water and become gels or dissolve in water and reach the intestine where they are digested by bacteria. As they are digested by bacteria, soluble fibers produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that provide your body energy. The FDA estimates that fibers fermented by bacteria provide about 2 calories per gram of fiber. Insoluble fibers travel to the intestine with very little change. Instead of being digested, insoluble fibers increase bulk, soften stool, and shorten transit time through the gastrointestinal tract. Starchy Vegetables: (corn, peas, squash, lima beans) Starchy foods are often referred to as 'carbs' because they have such a high carb count - there are many types of vegetables, referred to as starchy vegetables, that are actually fairly high in carbs. For example: 1-cup of cooked sweet corn contains about 31 grams of total carbs, including 3.6 grams of fiber, 6.8 grams of sugar. A cup of cooked peas provides 25 grams of total carbohydrates, 8.8 grams of fiber and 9.5 grams of sugar. 1 Medium-sized potato contains 37 grams of carbs, 4 of which are fiber. All digestible starch gets turned into sugar as it passes through the digestive tract - results in elevations in blood sugar and dangerously higher insulin levels. This means that even seemingly healthy food choices can lead to increases in blood sugar and insulin, which can lead to insulin resistance, prediabetes, or diabetes. Glycemic Index: The “glycemic index” is a term used to describe the blood glucose response to a particular food. The glycemic index is a method of ranking the effects of carb-based foods based on their effects on blood sugar - refers to how quickly sugar reaches the bloodstream after food consumption. High-GI foods pass rapidly through your digestive system and into your bloodstream, driving up your blood glucose levels and causing insulin to spike. Low-GI foods, on the other hand, pass more slowly through the digestive system and enter the bloodstream gradually, which keeps insulin levels low (1,2) Slow Carb: Your gut quickly absorbs high-GI carbs and spikes your blood sugar, resulting in high insulin that can increase storage of belly fat, increases inflammation, raises triglycerides and lowers HDL, raises blood pressure, lowers testosterone in men, and contributes to infertility in women. High-fiber, low-sugar carbs, are slowly digested and don’t lead to blood sugar and insulin spikes. These slow carbs reduce cancer risk and increase your body’s ability to detoxify (3) Blood Glucose and Insulin: When your blood glucose and insulin move up and down rapidly or stay high it disrupts your natural blood glucose balance. This can lead to your body having trouble responding to your blood glucose levels, which may contribute to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is associated with many health problems - type 2 Diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease (4) Study: A study published in August 2015 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition analyzed data from about 70,000 postmenopausal women. They found that women who had higher dietary glycemic index intake had increased odds of developing depression within the three-year study. They also found that higher consumption of added sugars was associated with depression risk. On the other hand, women who ate more fiber, fruits, and vegetables (which often have lower glycemic indexes) were shown to have a lower chance of developing depression, per the study’s findings. Researchers suggested that the association may be due to many different mechanisms. Which is the best weight loss diet? Ketogenic diet vs low carb diet vs atkins vs paleo? Which one of these meal plans is best to burn fat? 🔥 FREE 6 Week Challenge: https://gravitytransformation.com Fat Loss Calculator: http://gravitytransformation.com/macro-calculator/ Isn't the ketogenic diet and low carb diet essentially the same thing? How about Atkins and paleo aren't all of these diets just a fancy way of saying keep your carbs low. Well it's definitely safe to say that you are limiting your carb intake in all of these diet plans but each plan calls for a slightly different approach to burning fat. Most ketogenic diets require you to keep your carbs under 30 grams a day and the most carbs that I've ever seen on a keto plan was 50 grams a day. Usually this will account for 5% of your total daily intake. Then you would have somewhere between 75 to 80 percent of your calories from fat. And finally 15 to 20 percent of your calories from protein. With ketogenic it's clear that the carbs are very limited at only 5 percent per day and the reason why carbs are so limited is because the ketogenic diet is trying to put you into ketosis. To sum it up simply ketosis is a state in which you're going to burn more fat and produce Ketone bodies in your liver for use as energy when carbohydrates are really low. Low-carb diets on the other hand don't require an exact number of carbohydrates the way that keto does. Obviously since it's low carb you wouldnt expect to have more than 20 to 30 percent of your calories coming from carbs but even at 20 percent it's a huge difference from the five percent that you get with keto. So with low carb we can consider the exact number of carbs undefined whereas with Keto that number is very defined with exact numerical values. What about atkins? When taking a closer look at Atkins you see that Atkins is different from keto and low-carb as well. With Atkins the General accepted split is 30% protein 10% carbs and 60% fat. Again this is higher in carbs than the 5 percent we see with keto which Keto dieters would not support because they would say that having a higher level of carbs would take you out of ketosis. But Atkins at certain points dies definitely put you into ketosis. The plan takes you through four phases and a lot of these phases match up with the keto structure. In Phase 1 of Atkins you have to limit your totally daily carb intake to only 20 grams per day. This is as low if not even lower than keto. Then you progress to phase 2 where you still keep carbs really low but you add in certain vegetables berries nuts and seeds back into the diet. Then in Phase 3 which you only start once you're about 10 pounds from your weight loss goal, but once your there you start to add 10 grams of carbs to your diet each week. And finally in phase four you enter maintenance which allows you to eat anywhere from 45 to 100 grams of carbs per day. Phase one and two sound just like the ketogenic diet and I'm sure when your in those two phases you will be in a state of ketosis but when you enter into phase 3 and phase 4 you're going to be moving more towards a general low carb diet which as ive already mentioned is very different from keto. Now how about paleo, where does paleo fit in all of this. Well paleo once again elicits fat loss by keeping the list of approved carbs short but the paleo plan is different because it only allows Foods that were believed to be eaten by our caveman ancestors. The best paleo macronutrient split as defined by the perfect health diet and paleo leap.com is around 20 percent carbohydrates 65 percent fat and 15 percent protein. Again this is slightly different from what we've seen with low carb and Atkins but it's very different from keto. Even though paleo and Keto are both low in carbohydrates Keto is significantly lower than paleo again keto totals only at 5% of total daily intake. The Paleo diet is also very specific with what foods you can and cannot eat. Even though you can do this diet with regular produce it's highly recommended that all your meat products are grass-fed wild caught and pasture-raised. You're allowed to eat any fresh vegetables except for potatoes and any nuts except for peanuts. Also eggs, healthy oils like olive oil, and fresh fruit especially berries are allowed on the plan. Grains, bread, cereals, any processed food, legumes, beans, and Dairy are completely off the plan. Dairy is a big part of the ketogenic diet for many people. A lot of people get the massive amount of fat required on keto with options like cheese. Cheese would be forbidden on the Paleo diet but on paleo you would actually be able to eat things like pumpkin squash and yams. With keto it would be almost impossible to eat these things because you would easily exceed you're 5% carb allowance. Most of these diets matchup in their efforts to limit grains

Thomas DeLauer… 3 month studies conducted: Study - Diabetic Medicine, 2006- 102 patients with Type 2 diabetes were randomized to a low-carb or a low-fat diet for 3 months - The low-carb group lost 7.8 lbs, while the low-fat group lost only 2 lbs (1) Study - Diabetic Medicine, 2007- 3 diabetic and 13 non-diabetic individuals were randomized to a low-carb diet or a low-fat diet for 3 months - The low-carb group lost 15.2 lbs compared to 4.6 lbs in the low-fat group (2) 6 Month Studies: Study - New England Journal of Medicine, 2003- 132 obese individuals with severe obesity were put on either a low-fat or a low-carb diet for 6 months - many subjects had type II diabetes. The low-carb group lost an average of 12.8 lbs while the low-fat group lost only 4.2 lbs. Triglycerides went down by 38 mg/dL in the low-carb group, compared to only 7 mg/dL in the low-fat group. Insulin levels went down by 27% in the low-carb group, but increased slightly in the low-fat group. Fasting blood glucose levels went down by 26 mg/dL in the low-carb group, only 5 mg/dL in the low-carb group (3) Study - Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2003- 53 healthy but obese females were randomized to either a low-fat diet, or a low-carb diet. Low-fat group was calorie restricted. The study went on for 6 months. The women in the low-carb group lost an average of 8.5 kg (18.7 lbs), while the low-fat group lost an average of 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs) Whilst HDL improved slightly in both groups, there was a significant reductions in blood triglycerides in the low carb group. The study concluded: A very low carbohydrate diet is more effective than a low fat diet for short-term weight loss and, over 6 months, is not associated with deleterious effects on important cardiovascular risk factors (4) 12 Month Studies: Study - Journal of the American Medical Association, 2007- 311 overweight/obese premenopausal women were randomized to 4 diets: a low-c arb diet and then 3 low-fat diets for 12 months. At the end of the 12 months the low-carb diet lost, on average, 5lbs more than the 3 low-fat groups (not combined, but in comparison to each one, individually) The low-carb group also had the greatest improvements in blood pressure, triglycerides and HDL (5) Study - American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2009- 118 individuals with abdominal obesity were randomized to a low-carb or a low-fat diet for 12 months - The low-carb group lost 14.5 kg (32 lbs), while the low-fat group lost 11.5 kg (25.3 lbs) The low-carb group had greater decreases in triglycerides and greater increases in both HDL and LDL cholesterol, compared to the low-fat group. (6) 2 Year Studies: Study - the Annals of Internal Medicine- Also a two-year study that came to the same results as the 12 month studies - had very similar results in terms of weight loss; however, during the first 6 months, the low-carb group had greater reductions in diastolic blood pressure and triglyceride levels. WHAT I EAT IN A DAY | SLOW CARB DIET Hi guys- today I'm sharing what I eat in a day for 'What I Ate Wednesdays' of a typical day on the slow carb diet. This is a version of a low carb diet from Timothy Ferriss' book 'The Four Hour Body'. It's a flexible dieting plan. You don't count macros and it isn't exactly keto but it's a diet with plenty of nutrition and it really has worked for me. Hope you enjoy! "Beaner" Recipe Ingredients: 4 cans beans (preferably navy, kidney, pinto or other white beans) 2 peppers, red and green Red pepper rings Cumin Stock (vegetable or chicken) onion Frank's red hot Cilantro & corn (if you have/want) Garlic Olive Oil Directions: Sautee peppers, onions, garlic in olive oil. Rinse and mash beans (I use the Vitamix to pulse them and I add the stock to make it easier to mash) Transfer beans into pot and add chopped red pepper rings. Sometimes I add a bit of corn too. Add cumin (lots), Red Hot (lots) Cook down on medium and then low for 1/2 hour. Add chopped cilantro when cool if desired.
