Ketosis can occur during fasting, when you reduce the amount of carbs or calories in your diet, during pregnancy or after exercising for a long period of time. Many diets use ketosis as the means of burning fat while maintaining muscle - examples include the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets. This strategy can also lead to decreased hunger. How long does it take to kick your body into fat burning, ketosis mode? Roughly 3-4 days of consuming less than 50 carbs per day, the equivalent of 2 bananas. Benefits include weight loss, seizure prevention, cardiovascular health and type-2 diabetes help, to name a few. How does it Work? When glucose is in short supply, your liver will break down fats into ketones, which are then used throughout your body for energy. Muscles and other tissues in your body use ketones rather than glucose for energy metabolism. In a healthy person, the production of ketones for energy is the body’s natural response to starvation, so this happens when dieting, overnight and during fasting. Glucose or Ketones: Which is More Effective? Many brain diseases, such as epilepsy, are already being treated by the ketogenic diet. The mechanisms to why it helps the brain are still being studied, but there are some possible reasons that ketones seem to be a good energy source for the brain. One major Ketone, beta-hydroxybutyrate, or BHB, provides more energy per unit of oxygen than glucose, and thus may be even more efficient than glucose at providing energy to the brain. (3) -The ketogenic diet has also been found to increase the number of mitochondria in brain cells. In a 2004 study on rats, one group was fed a ketogenic diet while the other was fed a normal diet. A positive impact was found on the gene expression for mitochondrial enzymes in the hippocampus, the memory and learning center of the brain. (4) Ketosis and Body Water Composition: High fat and low carb diets are known to lead to fast weight loss. The fast weight loss is due to water weight being shed (5) -When you decrease carbs, you decrease water storage in the body. Who Can Benefit From Ketosis? If you are looking to shed some body fat, ketosis may be a good tool. This can go along with an exercise regimen as you maintain muscle while losing fat. Ketosis can also benefit those who need to boost brain power as energy may be utilized more effectively in the brain. *Be careful because those with diabetes can get too high of a level of ketones in their blood, which is very dangerous. This occurs due to the low levels of insulin in the blood, which will signal the body to produce excess ketones that will build up in the blood, making the blood pH too low. References: 1. instagram: https://www.instagram.com/darkobunic For already two weeks straight i have been carb depleting. That means i did not eat any form of carbohydrates. I do not recommend anybody doing this because you will get mentally exhausted and low low on energy. What i did for the past two weeks was pretty much only cardio. The first week i did high reps and low weight and the second week i did no weight traing what so ever. Also i ate a lot of protein, i focussed to have the majority of protein out of meat sources. Morning meal 1: 7 eggwhites and veggies Meal 2: 370grams of chicken and green beans Meal 3: 320grams of fish and again green beans Meal 4 and 5: Spicy tuna wraps (wrapped in lettuce) and two scoops of protein with 5-6 raspberries I can tell you the calories are really low from all these meals. But spread throughout the day i did not feel any hunger. I talked about my diet plan these coming weeks before my vacation. So i am going to do a reverse diet up to my vacation. Slowly increasing my calories by the week and decrease my cardio. Check the part where i talk about it and you will hear me explain the whole plan :D That's was pretty much a no carbs diet. A sugar alcohol is also known as a polyol and can be classified as a carb - most are derived from corn starch from genetically modified corn. Commonly included in most sugar free and “low-carb” products, but they do have a caloric/carb value. Each gram of a sugar alcohol turns into anywhere from less than 1 to as much as 3 calories. Use of Sugar Alcohols: Sugar alcohols are slowly and incompletely absorbed in the body. Once they are absorbed they use very little to no insulin to convert to energy as sugar alcohols are incompletely absorbed in the digestive system. A process called “passive diffusion” takes place - sugar alcohols that were consumed draw water into the bowels - results in only partial breakdown. The un-metabolized part of the sugar alcohol starts to rot, which creates a favorable environment for undesirable bacteria and pathogens to thrive and grow. How to Calculate: Subtract half of the grams of sugar alcohol listed on the food label from the total grams of carbs. Ex: Carbs: 20, Sugar Alcohol: 10, Total Carbs: 15 Fiber: Dietary fibers are considered complex carbs, but because fiber doesn’t raise blood glucose, low-carb dieters don’t “count” fiber since our body’s digestive enzymes can’t break it down. Fiber can provide calories, not as glucose, but as products of fermentation in the colon, similar to a sugar alcohol. Some fibers, called soluble fibers, either absorb water and become gels or dissolve in water and reach the intestine where they are digested by bacteria. As they are digested by bacteria, soluble fibers produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that provide your body energy. The FDA estimates that fibers fermented by bacteria provide about 2 calories per gram of fiber. Insoluble fibers travel to the intestine with very little change. Instead of being digested, insoluble fibers increase bulk, soften stool, and shorten transit time through the gastrointestinal tract. Starchy Vegetables: (corn, peas, squash, lima beans) Starchy foods are often referred to as 'carbs' because they have such a high carb count - there are many types of vegetables, referred to as starchy vegetables, that are actually fairly high in carbs. For example: 1-cup of cooked sweet corn contains about 31 grams of total carbs, including 3.6 grams of fiber, 6.8 grams of sugar. A cup of cooked peas provides 25 grams of total carbohydrates, 8.8 grams of fiber and 9.5 grams of sugar. 1 Medium-sized potato contains 37 grams of carbs, 4 of which are fiber. All digestible starch gets turned into sugar as it passes through the digestive tract - results in elevations in blood sugar and dangerously higher insulin levels. This means that even seemingly healthy food choices can lead to increases in blood sugar and insulin, which can lead to insulin resistance, prediabetes, or diabetes. http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Ketosis: The Top 3 Veggies for Low Carb Diets: Thomas DeLauer You shouldn't be afraid of the vegetables when you're in ketosis. Don't listen to the people that tell you that all these veggies are going to kick you out of ketosis and all this and it's going to ruin your time, because it doesn't always apply. I want to give you the three top vegetables that you should be eating, without a doubt, when you're in ketosis. It comes down to a few different factors. It's not just carbohydrates, although they do weigh a big part in this. The first vegetable that you really want to make sure you get a ton of when you're in ketosis is asparagus. Why? For one, asparagus is one of the lowest carbohydrate vegetables that you're going to find. Generally speaking, like 10 to 15 stalks of asparagus, you're only going to have like four grams of carbs. Within that, you're going to have two grams of fiber, so you really have barely any net effective carb, but it's more so than just that. It's the fact that it is a heavy, heavy prebiotic fiber. That prebiotic fiber helps act as a fertilizer for your intestinal tract and a fertilizer for the gut bacteria. When you're in ketosis, a lot of times we get a little bit of digestive upset right out the gate because our bodies are adapting to this new style of eating. Some of the gut bacteria that we were proliferant in before starts to go away and we start to establish new gut bacteria, which means we need that fertilizer to help it grow. Additionally, asparagus has something called asparagine in it. That asparagine in it is a very, very powerful component that helps our kidneys out. It helps our kidneys flush out extra calcium, and it helps our livers out too. We have a huge detoxing effect that comes from asparagus when we're in ketosis. Next up, cabbage. Why cabbage? For one, it's cruciferous, which I'm going to talk about in a little bit, but number two, it is huge when it comes to a probiotic effect. Yep, talking about gut health again. Cabbage contains a lot of sulfur as well. That sulfur can help heal some issues from acid reflux. A lot of times when people first start having fats in their diet, they start getting some issues where they feel really acidic, sometimes they get heart burn. The sulfur in the cabbage can help that, but one thing that I love when I'm in ketosis is sauerkraut. Third, bok choy. Bok choy is quickly becoming one of my favorite vegetables. It's another cruciferous one. Let me drop some knowledge on your regarding cruciferous vegetables. Contains something called indole-3-carbinol and diindolylmethane, also known as DIM. These are estrogen modulators. When you're in ketosis, we are doing a good job at modulating a lot of our hormones to begin with. Everything kind of balances out, but high levels of estrogen are usually associated with higher levels of body fat. If we can reduce the bad estrogens in the body, we can usually reduce that overall negative feedback that ends up producing more body fat. Now, to make matters better, bok choy is awesome in Vietnamese pho. If you just skip out on the noodles, add the bok choy, and add some of those other veggies, you're off to the races.

You're body won't produce too many keytones on a high carbohydrate diet, because your body won't need extra energy from fat due to the fact that its getting its energy from the more preferred carbohydrates. The only way for our body to use more fat for energy is by not having its preferred source there all the time. Eliminating carbs completely, however can have many drawbacks on our health and well being. Protein, carbs, and fats are all important and necessary for our body. So in comes the cyclical ketogenic diet aka carb cycling and also known originally as the anabolic Diet. There are many different approaches to carb cycling, but the general idea is that At some points of the week you're going to have a high amount of carbohydrates, and at other points of the week you're going to have a low amount of carbohydrates. Setting up the high carb and low carb splits will vary from one plan to the next. Some people may have very small changes in the amount of carbs they have from day to day. An example of this would be to set up a low carb, medium carb, and high carb day. Let's say 300 grams of carbs on high carb, 250 grams of carbs on your medium carb, and 200 grams of carbs on your no carb day. Another more advanced approach would be to do a High carb, low carb, and no carb day. The way that I like to set this kind of split up is by having a high amount of carbs on my high carb day, which for me would be somewhere around 400 grams, I would have one third or at the most half that amount for low carb day, and then try to get as close to 0 grams as possible on my no carb day and then repeat. An even more advanced approach would be to just cycle between high and no carb days. Or take it even a step further and do high, no, no. I don't really recommend having any more than two no carb days in a row. Make sure you don't jump to any extreme carb restrictions. An example of this is doing a 800 calorie diet when you could lose weight and maintain a better body composition with a 1500 calorie diet. Jumping to an extreme will not help you lose weight faster, in fact it'll probably backfire. Also in case you're wondering what kind of food you can eat on your no carb day, some great options are fish, chicken breast, ground turkey, protein shakes, Steak occasionally, and you can also have healthy fat sources like avocados, coconut oil, olive oil. and fatty fish like Salmon. For carbs make sure you are eating good sources of carbs like oats, brown rice, and sweet potatoes and avoid the junk food carbs. You can incorporate one cheat meal on one high carb day in the week, but that's it one cheat meal. You may notice that your strength and energy levels may go down while dieting like this. In fact you may feel like straight up garbage in the beginning. Understand that a lot of people feel this way when creating any kind of a calorie deficit. You're body will take a little while to adapt to using fat for energy instead of carbs. So the first 2 weeks can feel miserable. Give your body some time to adapt. A good idea is to plan your high carb days the day before a heavy lifting day, because this way you have stored glycogen available for your heavy lifts the next day. If you have no idea how many carbs to have on each day, try using a calorie calculator to find your maintenance macros and then add at least 50 grams of carbs to get the number for your high carb day. I'll include a calorie calculator in the description. Once you have your high carb number you should be able to figure out your low carb day. No carb day is obviously no carbs. After doing a carb cycling plan you may need to do some reverse dieting

Thomas DeLauer… 3 month studies conducted: Study - Diabetic Medicine, 2006- 102 patients with Type 2 diabetes were randomized to a low-carb or a low-fat diet for 3 months - The low-carb group lost 7.8 lbs, while the low-fat group lost only 2 lbs (1) Study - Diabetic Medicine, 2007- 3 diabetic and 13 non-diabetic individuals were randomized to a low-carb diet or a low-fat diet for 3 months - The low-carb group lost 15.2 lbs compared to 4.6 lbs in the low-fat group (2) 6 Month Studies: Study - New England Journal of Medicine, 2003- 132 obese individuals with severe obesity were put on either a low-fat or a low-carb diet for 6 months - many subjects had type II diabetes. The low-carb group lost an average of 12.8 lbs while the low-fat group lost only 4.2 lbs. Triglycerides went down by 38 mg/dL in the low-carb group, compared to only 7 mg/dL in the low-fat group. Insulin levels went down by 27% in the low-carb group, but increased slightly in the low-fat group. Fasting blood glucose levels went down by 26 mg/dL in the low-carb group, only 5 mg/dL in the low-carb group (3) Study - Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2003- 53 healthy but obese females were randomized to either a low-fat diet, or a low-carb diet. Low-fat group was calorie restricted. The study went on for 6 months. The women in the low-carb group lost an average of 8.5 kg (18.7 lbs), while the low-fat group lost an average of 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs) Whilst HDL improved slightly in both groups, there was a significant reductions in blood triglycerides in the low carb group. The study concluded: A very low carbohydrate diet is more effective than a low fat diet for short-term weight loss and, over 6 months, is not associated with deleterious effects on important cardiovascular risk factors (4) 12 Month Studies: Study - Journal of the American Medical Association, 2007- 311 overweight/obese premenopausal women were randomized to 4 diets: a low-c arb diet and then 3 low-fat diets for 12 months. At the end of the 12 months the low-carb diet lost, on average, 5lbs more than the 3 low-fat groups (not combined, but in comparison to each one, individually) The low-carb group also had the greatest improvements in blood pressure, triglycerides and HDL (5) Study - American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2009- 118 individuals with abdominal obesity were randomized to a low-carb or a low-fat diet for 12 months - The low-carb group lost 14.5 kg (32 lbs), while the low-fat group lost 11.5 kg (25.3 lbs) The low-carb group had greater decreases in triglycerides and greater increases in both HDL and LDL cholesterol, compared to the low-fat group. (6) 2 Year Studies: Study - the Annals of Internal Medicine- Also a two-year study that came to the same results as the 12 month studies - had very similar results in terms of weight loss; however, during the first 6 months, the low-carb group had greater reductions in diastolic blood pressure and triglyceride levels. What Happens If You Don't Eat ANY Carbs At All? Are Zero Carbs Diets Even Possible?

As an ex-Atkins dieter, I know all about a 'low-carb' diet... but what about a ZERO carb diet? Your body uses carbohydrates as its main fuel source. Sugars and starches are broken down into simple sugars during digestion. They're then absorbed into your bloodstream, to boost your blood sugar (glucose). The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that carbohydrates make up 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calorie intake, or between 200 and 300 grams of carbohydrates a day. But a low-carb diet limit the intake of carbohydrates — such as sugar, pasta, breads, grains, starchy vegetables and fruit — and emphasizes foods high in protein and fat. Low-carb diets restrict carbohydrates to 60 grams or less a day. Getting that number down to zero carbs is difficult - carbs hide everywhere! So happens if we only eat meat, eggs, and dairy? Well Inuit Indians and Eskimos and other groups already DO this. BUT HOW DO YOU POOP! Carbs definitely do move through our systems faster, but we are also less efficient at digesting them in general, which is a big part of why they contribute to a large fecal mass when you're eating a diet full of carbs. Fats and animal proteins usually have a digestibility rate of around 97%, while most carbs fall somewhere around 60-70%. So you might poop less often because you consume less mass, and the mass you do consume is more digestable. Oil and fats in meat also aid bowel movements (think castor oil), so those on a zero carb diet may actually find pooping easier!
